Online Lesson FAQ's
Who are online lessons a good fit for?

Online piano lessons are great for families who have schedules that limit the ability to attend piano lessons in person, as well as anyone who wishes to have the convenience of learning from home. It is recommended that students are at least 7 years of age for the online lesson setting since younger children tend to have more difficulty staying engaged.
What equipment do I need for online lessons?

You will need a reliable internet connection and a laptop computer or iPad to use for our online lessons. It is also important to keep a notebook, pencil, and any music books you need for your lessons handy.

Which online meeting platform will we use for our lessons?

Grace Piano Studio uses a platform called "Rock Out Loud" for our online lessons because of its superior sound quality and minimal latency. It is designed specifically for music lessons. If you are using a laptop computer, you will simply visit www.rockoutloud.live/join/gracepianostudio in your web browser to join the lesson room. If you are using an iPad, you will need to download the app and type "gracepianostudio" into the Lesson ID field to join.
What is the best way to set things up for an optimal viewing angle?

It is best to have your computer or iPad set up to the side of the piano on a table or music stand at a height that is just a little above the level of the piano keys. Ideally, your teacher will be able to see your face, body positioning, and hands at the keyboard for the best experience. See the image below for a good example.
What methods are used to make this learning format a successful experience?

During your lessons, your teacher will use one camera positioned from the side so you can see proper body positioning at the piano. Another camera will show you a top-down view of the piano keys for clear demonstration of playing. Your teacher will also use descriptive language to help build understanding and the whiteboard feature in the online lesson platform to practice music theory concepts.
